ABOUT WHATZIT

Pimples, the scourge of adolescents everywhere, are actually portals through which creatures from another dimension derive voyeuristic pleasure. WHATZIT is the story of a creature from this alien world and an American teenager and how their fates intertwine. It is a tale of adolescent angst, action, adventure and acne.    Read Whatzit on activate.com.    Buy Whatzit.

ABOUT GIDEON

Gideon Kendall was born in Austin, Texas and spent his childhood on a commune deep in the backwoods of West Virginia.  Marvel Comics, purchased at the lone drugstore in the little town of Grantsville, WV, were his obsession. He attended high school in Philadelphia, PA and moved to New York City to attend art school, where the last vestiges of his love for comics were systematically beaten out of him (temporarily). He received his BFA from The Cooper Union and after mostly-unsuccessful attempts at being a gallery artist and/or a rock star, Gideon settled into a career in the NYC animation industry. When that industry died an ugly death in the mid-oughts he became a freelance illustrator, producing wholesome works for children. A growing love for the world of indie comics and graphic novels simmered beneath the surface.

In 1998 Gideon married fellow artist and long-time crush Julie Peppito. Since then they have reproduced once and despite this they are still together.

In 2001 Gideon published his first children’s book; “Littlebat’s Halloween Story”, written by Diane Mayr and published by Albert Whitman & Co.  Since then he has illustrated several other picture books, most notably "Dino Pets" and “Dino Pets Go to School (Penguin/Putnam, 2006 & 2011 respectively). Gideon has also illustrated several middle-grade novels, including The Seems series for Bloomsbury and The Underworld Chronicles series for Sourcebooks. He has also done a variety of work for grownups including work for The New York Times, Puma, College Music Journal, AVAAZ.org, Sundance Resort, and NIKE. He also occasionally exhibited his artwork in various galleries around NYC, usually in conjunction with his wife Julie.

One morning in 2009 he woke up with an idea. It was a big, disgusting idea and for the next year or so he scribbled notes and sketches pertaining to what was to become WHATZIT. In 2011 He enrolled in Danny Fingeroth's "Writing For Comics and Graphic Novels" course at MOCCA. Hannah Menzies was also in the class, and with Danny and Hannah's help, Gideon finally wrote up a treatment of the entire convoluted, bombastic and far fetched story. Then he began to draw. After showing the first batch of pages to Simon Fraser of Act-i-Vate.com, Gideon began posting pages of the book to the site in 2012. By the following year he had completed enough of the story to produce the first printed issue, with issue #2 to be released in the spring of 2014.

And so, after toiling in various genres, Gideon finds himself returning to his first love: comics. He is having a great time producing WHATZIT and also collaborating on "WAIT…it gets worse", a collection of autobiographical comics with his friend Doug Latino. Gideon intends to continue making comics while simultaneously earning a living as an illustrator and raising his kid in Brooklyn until either his brain explodes, he goes blind, or the world comes to an end.
